💛 Local Love: The Mustard Lady-Small Shop, Big Flavour & Serious Mustard Attitude! 🌶️🥖🧀

Courtenay, Vancouver Island | Seaspray & S’mores
Some people go shopping for shoes. We go shopping for cheese, mustard and anything that looks like it belongs on a charcuterie board. Priorities, people! 😂
There's something about a little road trip around Vancouver Island that always leads us somewhere delicious. And on our Sunday adventure in Courtenay, Troy and I made a stop at a shop we'd been wanting to explore a little more — The Mustard Lady!
Now, this wasn't our first introduction to their mustard. We'd already discovered them at the Campbell River Farmers Market and brought home some of their delicious creations.
But visiting their actual shop? Well, that's a whole different level of temptation!
💛 A Little Shop Packed With Big Flavour
Located at 510 Duncan Avenue in downtown Courtenay, The Mustard Lady is one of those places where you walk through the door thinking you'll just have a quick look.
Famous last words.
Because once you're inside, there's a whole lot more happening than mustard!
We're talking specialty cheeses, locally sourced meats, pickles, spreads, preserves and all sorts of wonderful little goodies that make you start planning your next snack before you've even finished breakfast.
And then, of course, there's the mustard.
Not your average squeeze-it-on-a-hot-dog-and-call-it-a-day mustard, either!
Their selection includes flavours like Hot Honey, Blue Cheese, Lemon, Dill, Horseradish, Honey Garlic and even Olive and Caper with Juniper.
Who knew mustard could have such a personality?
Honestly, some of these mustards sound like they should come with their own little wine-and-cheese party invitations.
🧀 Supporting Local, One Delicious Bite at a Time
One of the things we really appreciate about The Mustard Lady is its focus on Vancouver Island and British Columbia producers.
They carry specialty products from businesses such as Natural Pastures in Courtenay and Little Qualicum Cheese Works, along with other regional food makers.
It's the kind of shop where you can discover something new, support smaller producers and take home something a little different from what you'd find in the average grocery store.
They also offer custom charcuterie boards and boxes, which would be perfect for birthdays, celebrations, entertaining or those evenings when you want to look like you've gone to a whole lot of trouble without actually turning on the oven.
Now that's our kind of entertaining!
And apparently, they even carry something called Cowboy Candy — candied pickled jalapeños.
Because why should cowboys have all the fun?
🛍️ Our Little Shopping Haul
Naturally, Troy and I weren't about to leave empty-handed.
We brought home a delicious little collection of goodies, including:
Espresso Gouda
Silo cheese
Chorizo sausages
Mustard pickles
Bumbleberry Cocoa Butter
Let's just say we weren't exactly shopping for a sensible Tuesday-night salad.
The Espresso Gouda alone sounded too interesting to pass up. And with a few different cheeses, some chorizo and those mustard pickles, I was already picturing a charcuterie board before we'd even made it home.
Sometimes the best souvenirs aren't magnets or T-shirts.
Sometimes they're cheese.
🍇 From Little Shop to Fabulous Snack Board
Once we got home, I decided our purchases deserved a proper presentation.
Out came the wooden board, the cheeses, meats, crackers and a few extra goodies from the kitchen.
A little arranging here, a little rearranging there, a few photos outside in the natural light...
And suddenly our little shopping trip had turned into a pretty fabulous charcuterie spread!
Of course, when you're putting together a board for Seaspray & S’mores, it can't just taste good. It has to look good too.
There may have been a little more cheese arranging than strictly necessary.
But that's research, right?
And the best part about making your own board is that you can mix and match whatever you love. A few interesting cheeses, some savoury meats, crunchy crackers, something pickled and a little sweetness — and you've got yourself a delicious afternoon.
No complicated recipe required.
Just good food and someone willing to help eat it!
❤️ It's the People, Too
Something else that made our visit special was the friendly welcome we received.
We chatted with the staff about Seaspray & S’mores and our love of sharing the little businesses, hidden gems and interesting places we discover around Vancouver Island.
They were happy to hear about our feature and even mentioned they'd be willing to share it.
And that's exactly why we love doing this.
Behind these little local shops are real people, wonderful products and businesses that deserve a little extra attention.
Sometimes a quick stop becomes one of the highlights of your day.
And sometimes you discover a place you'll happily return to whenever you're in the neighbourhood.
Whether you're a mustard enthusiast, a cheese lover, a charcuterie fanatic or just someone who enjoys poking around a great little local shop, The Mustard Lady is absolutely worth adding to your Courtenay adventures.
For us, it's these little discoveries that make exploring Vancouver Island so much fun. Good food, friendly faces and wonderful local businesses that deserve a little extra love.
And really, isn't that what a great Sunday adventure is all about? 💛
